Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a light transmitting body of uniform quality and prolong the life of heating body by using the heating bodies provided on the inner walls of the inner and outer crucibles respectively for keeping the internal temperature of the crucibles, and sealing an inert gas in the gap between the crucible walls. CONSTITUTION:An inner crusible 12 for melting a glass composition 13 for a core and an outer crucible 28 for melting a glass composition 29 for a clad are mounted in the top and bottom furnace bodies 40 and 42 having heating bodies 44 and 46 respectively, and heating bodies 14 and 15 are provided in the wall of the inner crucible 12. a heating body 30 is provided in the wall of the outer crucible 28 to keep the temperature of the contents in the crucibles at an optimal temperature independentaly. An inert gas is fed from a pipe 55 into the interior of the furnace and the gap in the crucible wall to prevent the loss of the heating bodies. In the melting and refining steps of the glass contents 13 and 29, O2 is jetted from a pipe 56 through a nozzle 57, and the pipe 56 is removed in the step of drawing out the resultant light trasmitting body.
