Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent crystallization and obtain an optical fiber free from scratches due to a conventional rapid cooling method using a metal roll by contacting a liq. metal as a cooling medium to a drawn optical fiber to rapidly cool the fiber in drawing. CONSTITUTION:Molten glass 2 in crucible 1 provided with heating section 3 is put into the inner crucible of crucible 4 composed of inner and outer crucibles and housing liq. metal 5 such as Ga or In for cooling together with crucible 1. By applying pressure to glass 2 and metal 5 with inert gases, respectively, glass 2 is spouted from spouting outlet 6 together with metal 5. As a result, the spouted glass is solidified by rapid cooling. In place of a metal roll of a conventional method liq. metal 5 is used to prevent occurrence of scratches, and by making crucible 1 double crucible type one an optical fiber free from a strength lowering and having core and clad is obtd.
