Abstract

PURPOSE:Barrier layers are formed on the inner surface of a quartz tube so that the reaction temperature is raised higher as the barrier layer comes nearer to the core layer to produce optical fiber with low loss in long wave bands as well as in short wave bands. CONSTITUTION:A barrier layer 21 is formed on the inner surface of a quartz tube 3 by the MCVD method at a relatively low temperature of 1,300-1,400 deg.C. Then, an additional layer 22 is formed on the inner surface at a temperature of 1,450- 1,550 deg.C by the MCVD method. The composition of the barrier layer 21 may be different from or equal to that of the layer 22. For example, the layer 21 is composed of a ternary system and the layer 22 is of a quanternary system. The core layer 10 is formed on the inner surface of the barrier layer 22 and the rsultant rod is drawn into a dense fiber, that is, the objective optical fiber.
