Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber base material having a long length with a small loss, by cutting out an optical fiber base material of porous glass, which has been manufactured by a vapor phase axis attaching method, so as to be symmetrical to a point against the axis, and making it a base material of a single polarization and single mode optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A porous base material 11 having a core 12 and a clad 13, which has been manufactured by a vapor phase axis attaching method, as shown in the figure (a) is cut in the longitudinal directin and also to an area which is point- symmetrical to the axis in the section as shown in the figure (b), and a porous glass base material 14 is manufactured. Subsequently, a clad 15 which has been obtained by cutting from the porous glass base material which has been manufactured by the vapor phase axis attaching method in the same way and is different in the refractive index from that of the clad 13 is stuck to the base material 14 as shown in the figure (c), and thus a base material 16 is manufactured, and a base material 17 for a single polarization and single mode optical fiber of a transparent glass which has been made integral with heating is manufactured as shown in the figure (d).
