Abstract
PURPOSE:To effect good internal bonding by a method wherein a specified glass- surface modifier and oxygen gas are flowed on the internal surface of a silica-based glass tube heated to a high temperature so that the inner surface undergoes modification treatment. CONSTITUTION:Prior to internal bonding of layer which will become clad or core of optical fiber, glass surface modifier described below and oxygen gas are flowed inside a silica-based glass tube. At the same time, the glass tube is heated to a high temperature, preferably to a temperature at which its outer surface exceeds 1,000 deg.C so that the tube inner surface is treated for modification. The modifier is a material which, when heated to a high temperature in the presence of oxygen, produces no such material as having boiling point or sublimation point higher than that needed for internal bonding of layer to be formed into clad of optical fiber. Furthermore, such material must contain less than 1wt% of H2, elements producing glass-forming oxide and glass modification oxide, and one or more of elements such as halogens and sulfur. It is preferable to have the material contain one or more of F, B, and P as cpd.
