Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a clad glass pipe for an optical fiber transmitting infrared rays by fixing a quartz glass pipe to the outer frame of a metallic mold splittable into a plurality of segments and having a cylindrical hollow part, pouring molten fluoride glass in the gap between the frame and the pipe, and slowly cooling the glass after annealing. CONSTITUTION:A thin-walled glass pipe 7 with a high m.p. is fixed at the central axial part of a mold having outer frames 1, 1' splittable into a plurality of segments and forming a cylindrical hollow part 4, and after preheating the mold to a temp. close to the transition temp. of fluoride glass, molten fluoride glass is poured in the gap between the pipe 7 and the frames 1, 1'. The mold is then kept at a temp. several-several 10 deg.C below the transition temp. of the fluoride glass to anneal the glass, and it is slowly cooled. After the cooling the frames 1, 1' are detached to take out the fluoride glass formed in the interior. The internal thin-walled glass pipe 7 is scraped away.
