Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce the fuel cost, improve the productivity and prepare molten silica, by changing the α-quartz in a raw material, e.g. quartzite, fed from the top of a vertical preheating furnace into the β-quartz, and dropping the β- quartz to a melting furnace linked to the bottom of the preheating furnace by the own weight.
CONSTITUTION: Quartzite or silica sand which is a raw material having a grain diameter ≤50mm is fed from a raw material tank 11 through a feed inlet 2 onto a barrier plate 5 in a preheating furnace 3. A liquid or gaseous fuel and air are fed from a nozzle 6 provided on the top of the furnace 3 and burned to operate the furnace 3 at an internal temperature above the transition temperature of the α-quartz, i.e. the temperature to become the β-quartz. The raw material is preheated at the high temperature to change the α-quartz into the β-quartz at the transition temperature of 523°C or above of the α-quartz, and the structure is broken due to the reduction in density in the transition from the α-quartz to the β-quartz, and the dusting is promoted. The β-quartz is pushed to a connecting pipe 8 by a pushing means 7 to feed the preheated raw material in a fully preheated state directly to a melting part 9.
