Abstract
PURPOSE: To decrease the production amt. of Co-60 from the sheath of a control rod used for a BWR plant considerably and to suppress plant dosage rate considerably by limiting the content of Co in the stainless steel of the said sheath and blade materials.
CONSTITUTION: The cooling water flowed into a boilding water reactor pressure vessel 2 past a water feed piping 1 is heated by a fuel rod 4 in the vessel and forms steam which is fed to a piping 3. From the pipe 1, Co is carried into the vessel 2 although it is of a trace amt. Thic Co sticks on the rod 4 and is activated to Co-60 which again elutes in the reactor water. Co is also directly irradiated from an apparatus 5 in the reactor, for example, a control rod, by which Co-60 is eluted. Such Co-60 sticks on a recirculating piping 6, etc., and is the major cause for the increase in dosage rate. Thereupon, a material of 18.0W 20.0% Cr, 8.0W10.5% Ni, ≤0.1% Co and the balance substantially Fe is used for the sheath and blade of the control rod. Thereby, the production amt. of the Co- 60 is reduced.
