Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the title steel which can hold resistance to intergranular and intragranular stress corrosion cracking by limiting the amts. of P, N, Mo, V, Cu and Co contained in an austenitic stainless steel; adding Nb; and controlling the amts. of dissolved carbon and dissolved phosphorus.
CONSTITUTION: Impurity elements contained in an austenitic stainless steel are limited as follows; total P≤0.013%, total N≤0.02%, total Mo≤0.01%, total V≤ 0.01%. total Cu≤0.04%, total Co≤0.08% and 5×Mo%+3×V%+1.5×Cu%+1 ×Co%=0.2%. Thus, the influence of intragranular stress corrosion cracking can be eliminated. Nb is further added in an amt. of Nb/C=15W20 to control the amt. of dissolved carbon contained in the steel to below 0.004% and that of dissolved phosphorus to below 0.005%. The resulting austenitic stainless steel does not cause intergranular and intragranular stress corrosion craking at all.
