Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the machinability of a ferritic stainless steel without deteriorating the stress corrosion cracking resistance and pitting corrosion resistance by composing the steel of a respectively specified amt. of C, N, Si, Mn, Cr, Mo and S and the balance Fe and adjusting the ratio of Mn/S to a restricted value to form (Mn.Cr)S type inclusions.
CONSTITUTION: The title stainless steel is composed of C≤0.03%, N≤0.07% (C+N≤0.07%), Si≤1%, Mn≤2%, Cr 20W32%, Mo 0.5W6%, S 0.05W0.4% and the balance Fe. The ratio of Mn/S is adjusted to 2W5 to form (Mn.Cr)S type inclusions contg. Cr 10W40% in the steel. By this method the inferior machinability of a conventional high Cr ferritic stainless steel can be improved by adjusting the above-mentioned inclusion compsn. without deteriorating the corrosion resistance.
