Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a cold working tool steel with improved mechanical anisotropy and superior machinability by adding S as a machinability imparting element to a tool steel and further adding Te corresponding to the S.
CONSTITUTION: ≤0.40% S as a machinability imparting element is added to a molten steel contg. 0.4W2.6% C, <2.0% Si, <3.0% Mn, <20% Cr and <10% Mo. At this time, ≤0.10% Te is added in a Te to S ratio of 0.04 or more to improve the form of sulfide inclusions in the molten steel so that at least 80% of the inclusions of not less than 2μ major axis have a major to minor axis ratio of 10 or more. Prior to the addition of Te, a nonoxidizing gas is blown into the molten steel to float and separate harmful oxide inclusions. By adding <4% Ni, <13% Co or one or more among <20% W, <5% V, <3% Nb and <0.5% Ti, the hardenability, heat resistance, etc. of the steel are enhanced. To further enhance the machinability a small amount of Pb, Se, Bi, Ca, etc. may be added before or after adding Te.
