Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a free-cutting steel having excellent cold-forging property and little anisotropism in mechanical properties, by addn. of specific amounts of Te and S to a carbon steel for use in mechanical construction or to a variety of alloy steels.
CONSTITUTION: A steel comprising <0.60% C, <0.50% Si, <2.0% Mn, 0.04W 0.40% S, 0.003W0.03% Te, the ratio Te/S being not smaller than 0.04. Or a low alloy steel containing, in addn., to the above described components, one or more members selected from the group consisting of <4.5% Ni, <3.5% Cr, <1.0% Mo. Or a steel containing, instead of Ni, Cr, Mo, one or more members selected from the group consisting of 0.04W0.25% P, 0.01W0.30% Pb, 0.01W0.30% Bi. Or a steel containing, in addn., simultaneously one or more members out of NI, Cr, Mo, and one or more members out of P, Pb, Bi. The addn. of S improves the free cutting property, and the addn. of Te and S prevents the flattening of sulfide such as MnS, so that a steel having excellent free-cutting property and having little anisotropism in mechanical properties it obtained.
