Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a small-size focal length variable lens where the focal length is changed in a high speed and the power is changed to positive or negative, by providing a polarizing means and a means for changing an applied voltage which has an inclined intensity distribution in a plane vertical to the direction of incidence of the light of an electrooptic crystal. CONSTITUTION:The first transparent electrode 2 consisting of plural concentric ring- shaped transparent electrodes 21-2n at equal intervals is provided on one face of a KH2PO4 crystal 1 having the primary electrooptic effect, and the second plane transparent electrode 4 is provided on the other face of the crystal 1, and a polarizing plate 5 is arranged in the optical path. A variable voltage is applied to transparent electrodes 21-2n from leader lines of a power source 6 where resistances R1-Rn satisfying Rm=R/2+R(m-1) (R is an optional constant and m is a natural number) are connected in parallel with a variable power source 7. The focal length is changed in accordance with the applied voltage, and the power is changed to positive or negative by rotating the polarization direction by the polarizing plate 5. Since the voltage control and the rotation of the polarization plane are utilized, a small-size focal length variable lens is obtained where the focal length is changed in a high speed and the power is changed positive or negative.
