Abstract

The information concerned is in the form of a light intensity and/or light polarisation and/or spectral composition varying in one, two or three dimensions and/or over time and the conversion of the information is performed by electrooptical modulators, which for example comprise liquid crystals, and photodetectors, such as for example photoresistors. According to the invention, the electrooptical modulators (1) consist of a material of intrinsic hysteresis with respect to the dependence of the light transmission on the modulator voltage. The modulators (1a, 1b...) are located in the path of rays between at least one light source and photodetectors (2a, 2b..), of which at least one is arranged behind each modulator (1), seen from the light source. Each modulator has on its one side an electrode which is isolated from the other modulator electrodes and determines the geometrical size of the modulator. Each photodetector (2) is electrically connected to the electrode (12) of a neighbouring modulator. In this way, many registers of simple construction are obtained. The shift registers are activated either electrically by means of voltage sources (4 and 5) or optically. <IMAGE>
