Abstract

PURPOSE: To remarkably improve the concentrating and dewatering properties of precipitating sludge and to lower a required amount of a mineral acid, by combining Fenton's process for the disposal of waste water with neutralization using magnesium.
CONSTITUTION: A metal ion-dissocciating substance 3-2, e.g. FeCl3, and an oxidizing agent 4-2, e.g. H2O2 or the like, are added into COD-contng. waste water 1 in an agitating vessel 2. An acid 15 may be added to adjust the waste water at pH3-4 or so, if necessary. The mixed solution is agitated for a certain period. The reacted liquid is introduced into a neutralizing vessel 5, where the liquid is neutralized at pH6-8 or so by the addition of an alkali agent 6 such as Mg(OH)2, MgO, dolomite or the like. Consequently, extremely thick sludge mainly composed of Fe(OH)3 is sufficiently precipitated. The sludge is separated as precipitating sludge 9 in a sedimentation pool 7 with high separability. The sludge as such is extracted as sludge 10, and dissolved by a mineral acid 12, e.g. sulfuric acid, in an acid treating vessel 11. The effluent from the pool 7 is taken out as purified water.
