Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a thermion emission cathode wherein the top end part of an electron emission cathode made of LaB6 is composed of a two planes-crossed body containing at least more than one of plane azimuth 100; also at least one of planes azimuth 100 is left it is, and the other plane is covered with a electron emission suppressed film whose work function is comparatively large. CONSTITUTION:(1) is a single crystal LaB6, (2) is a carbon heating unit, (3) is an electrode, (4) is a grid and (5) is an anode; the carbon heating unit 2 is heated by forcing a current to flow through the electrode 3, and thermoelectrons are emitted from the LaB6 1 which is heated by said generation of heat. In this thermion emission, the electron emission area of the top end part 1T of LaB6 is controlled by a potential gradient wherein the anode is positive potential the grid is negative potential and the LaB6 is zero potential. In the initial stage of use of such electron gun, the top end part of which is gradually consumed and sharpened as a result of long use, even if said top end part 1T has a minute curvation of less than radius 10mum. Consequently, a low exponential crystal face appears on the side plane.
