Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high brightness electron beam by using a single crystal cathode with specific crystal surfaces whose work function is small.
CONSTITUTION: The head 22 of the cross-sectionally square base section 2 in the cathode chip 21 of the LaB6 single crystal forms a conical trapezoid with a linear oblique wall. The tip surface section 3 of the head 22 is cut so as to consist of only the specific crystal surface selected from the crystal surfaces whose axial direction is any one of the LaB6 single crystals (100)(110) and (111). The cathode head mentioned above can have a concave or convex curved surface, but in general, it should be formed linearly.
