Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a killed steel ingot for hot rolling while preventing the generation of surface defects and reduction in toughness by a method wherein N is fixed by jointly adding Ti and Zr and the excess of Ti is avoided, when continuously casting a steel of specified composition containing either one or both of Nb and V.
CONSTITUTION: A steel containing up to 0.6% of C, up to 0.75% of Si, up to 2.0% of Mn, up to 0.04% of P, up to 0.05% of S, up to 0.09% of Al, up to 0.01% of N, 0.005W0.6% of Zr and 0.005W0.03% of Ti, and additionally containing at least one of 0.01W0.10% of Nb and 0.01W0.20% of V, the balance being Fe and unavoidable impurities, wherein 6.5TotalTi+3.4TotalZr-22.1TotalN≥0, is melted and is continuously cast to produce a predetermined ingot. Accordingly, the generation of surface defects characteristic of steels containing either one or both of Nb and V as well as the reduction of roughness can be prevented, and a killed steel ingot for hot rolling enhanced in required quality characteristics can be obtained.
