Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce the roll inscribed on the face having a high-abrasion resistance, a heat crack resistance and a toughness, by adding a metal carbide or a rare earth metal oxide to a melt having a specified composition when the melt is poured into a metal mold, and forging the resultant cast ingot with a high forging ratio. CONSTITUTION:A cast iron or adamite melt comprising, by wt%, 1.5-3.5% C, Si<=2.5%, Mn<=1.0%, P<=0.020%, S<=0.020%, Ni<=2.0%, Cr<=5.0%, Mo<=2.0% and the balance being Fe and inevitable impurities is poured into a metal mold. At this time, i.e. during pouring the melt into the metal mold, one or more of metal carbides and rare earth metal (REM) oxides are added to the melt at a rate of 0.01-0.1wt% by weight of the melt. The resultant cast roll ingot is easily forged into a roll material with a forging ratio of 1.8S or more. Thereafter, the roll material is heat-treated and mechanically worked to produce a forged roll for use in hot-rolling.
