Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a baking hardenable Al alloy having high strength and superior toughness and enhancing the strength by baking after forming by adding a prescribed percentage each of Mg and Cu and precipitating an Al-Mg- Cu compound having a specified average grain size or below.
CONSTITUTION: This Al alloy contains 0.3W5% Mg and 0.05W0.5% Cu, and it contains a precipitated Al-Mg-Cu compound having ≤2,000Å average diameter. The Al alloy is hot rolled in an ordinary process, optionally cold rolled, and annealed at ≥350°C to force Cu to be a solubilized. The annealed Al alloy is optionally cold rolled again, and an Al alloy plate is formed and baked to precipitate an Al-Mg-Cu compound having ≤2,000Åaverage diameter. Thus, the formed product is hardened.
