Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium excellent in the corrosion resistance without causing the change in magnetic performance and shape, by striking charged particles on the surface of a magnetic metallic thin film under O2 atmosphere and forming oxide film having protective property on the film surface. CONSTITUTION:On the surface of a magnetic layer 1 vapor-deposited with a magnetic metal (Co or the like) on a plastic film of polyethyleneterephtalate, charged particles (ion beam)3 generated at an ion generator 2 are struck to etch the super-surface layer about 10Angstrom or lower for clean surface, and O ions are struck under O2 gas atmoshere about 10<-4> Torr. in vacuum to form a stable metallic oxide layer of CoO, Co2O3 or the like of several 10Angstrom thickness for the protection of the surface. Thus, a magnetic tape without deterioration in magnetic layer for a long time even under high humidity and with good corrosion resistance can be obtained, to avoid adverse effect on the recording and reproducing characteristics.
