Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve coercive force and corrosion resistance by forming a magnetic layer in such a way that the value of the saturation magnetization of the magnetic layer is made larger than the value of the saturation magnetization of bulk of the same composition in a magnetic recording medium having the magnetic layer consisting essentially of Co and Cr. CONSTITUTION:In producing a magnetic recording medium 6 by forming a magnetic thin film 7 having an easy-to-magnetize axis in the perpendicular direction of the film and consisting essentially of Co and Cr on a nonmagnetic base material 2 by a vacuum deposition method, conditions such as the atmosphere at the vapor deposition, the forming speed of the film 7, and the temp. of the material 2 are controlled, whereby the layer 7 is formed in such a way that the value of the saturation magnetization of the layer 7 has the value larger than the value of the saturation magnetization of the bulk having the same composition as the average value of the composition of the layer 7, and the intended magnetic recording medium is obtained. It is possible to increase the value of the saturation magnetization of the layer 7 by lowering the gaseous Ar pressure at the vapor deposition or increasing the temp. of the material 2.
