Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a large mechanical strength and an improved travelling performance, by causing the discontinuous cracks to a thin film of ferromagnetic substance. CONSTITUTION:A thin film of ferromagnetic substance such as Co-Ni or the like is formed on a substrate of polyester film or the like to obtain a magnetic recording medium. In such recording medium, the cracks 1 having the average length of about <=1mm. (preferably <=0.5mm.) is caused to the ferromagnetic substance thin film. (The crack can have branches.) These cracks can be caused in a desired form by the following methods: (1) a sample having no crack is processed with an appropriate tension and at a proper temperature; and (2) a substrate is put under a compratively high tension, and then a vapor deposition is carried out with a proper speed of vapor deposition and at a proper temperature of substrate; and others.
