Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce weight and cost by continuously forming a carbon buffer layer, nonmagnetic metallic underlying layer, magnetic layer and protective lubricating layer by sputtering in this order. CONSTITUTION:The buffer layer 6 consisting of a thin carbon film, the nonmagnetic metallic underlying layer 3, the magnetic layer 4 and the protective lubricating layer 5 are continuously formed by sputtering in this order on a nonmagnetic substrate 1a consisting of plastic, etc. Namely, the thin carbon film is formed by sputtering as the buffer layer 6 so as to exist between the substrate 1a consisting of the plastic, etc., and the nonmagnetic metallic underlying layer 3 and, therefore, the release of gas such as moisture occluded in the substrate 1a is prevented. The lightweight and inexpensive magnetic recording medium is thereby obtd. while good magnetic characteristics are maintained.
