Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce weight and cost while maintaining excellent magnetic characteristics by interposing a silicon nitride film as a buffer layer between a plastic substrate and nonmagnetic metallic underlying layer. CONSTITUTION:The buffer layer 6 consisting of the thin silicon nitride (Si3N4) film, the nonmagnetic metallic underlying layer 3, a magnetic layer 4 and a protective lubricating layer 5 are continuously formed in this order by sputtering on the nonmagnetic substrate 1a consisting of plastic, etc. Namely, the thin silicon oxide film is formed by sputtering so as to be interposed as the buffer layer 6 and, therefore, the gaseous release of the moisture, etc., occluded in the substrate 1a is prevented. The magnetic recording medium which is lighter in weight and lower in cost than heretofore is thereby obtd. while the good magnetic characteristics are maintained.
