Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain good magnetic characteristics by using plastic or composite material of plastic and ceramics by sputtering and forming a buffer layer consisting of a thin TiN film, nonmetallic underlying layer, magnetic layer and protective lubricating layer continuously in this order on a nonmagnetic substrate. CONSTITUTION:The TiN buffer layer 6, the nonmetallic underlying layer 3, the magnetic layer 4 and the protective lubricating layer 5 are continuously sputtered and formed in this order on a substrate 1a. The thin TiN film is sputtered and formed so as to be interposed as the buffer layer 6 between the substrate 1a consisting of the plastic, etc., and the underlying layer 3 consisting of a nonmagnetic metal and, therefore, the gas release of the moisture, etc., occluded in the substrate 1a is prevented. The stage for surface polishing is thus omitted by using the substrate 1a consisting of the plastic, by which the weight and cost are reduced. In addition, the disadvantages inherent to the plastic substrate 1a are eliminated by forming the TiN buffer layer 6 by using the sputtering method, by which the magnetic characteristics intrinsic to the medium are maintained.
