Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve high-density recording by preventing magnetic-flux leakage by forming the surface of a magnetic material layer, which is a rear end when a thin-film head element is moved, at right angle to the surface of a magnetic recording medium when constituting the thin-film head element on a substrate serving as a slider. CONSTITUTION:On the surface of a member 12 serving as a slider, an insulating layer 13 is formed and at part of it, a recessed part is made; and a lower magnetic layer 14, an insulating layer 15, conductor layers 16, and an insulating layer 17 surrounding the conductor layers 16 are formed successively in the recessed part so that the layers 14, 15 and 17 are in the same plane. After a gap forming material 18 is formed, a lower magnetic layer 19 is formed on the gap forming member 18 including the rear region 20 of the lower magnetic layer 14. Then, a protective film 21 of Al2O3, etc., is formed on the magnetic layer 19. Thus, a thin-film head which has the magnetic layer 19 at right angles to the running direction 11 (arrow) of a magnetic disk is obtained. The expansion of a recording magnetic field is made steep at the rear end part of the head, thereby achieving high-density recording.
