Abstract
PURPOSE:To stir the unsolidified molten metal in a continuously cast ingot correctly in electromagnetically stirring the unsolidified molten steel in the continuously cast ingot by detecting the drawing speed of said ingot, and automatically controlling the velocity of stirring flow of the molten metal at the solidification interface with respect to a change in the solidification thickness of the ingot by means of the value detected therewith. CONSTITUTION:While a continuously cast ingot 1 is drawn with pinch rolls 5, the unsolidified molten steel in the ingot is stirred with an electromagnetic stirrer 2. At this time, the number of revolutions of the rolls 5 is measured with a tachometer 7 directly coupled to a motor 6 for driving the pinch rolls, and the output Vm thereof is inputted to a solidified shell thickness operator 4a of an arithmetic device 4, by which the solidification thickness is operated. The output (d) thereof is inputted to a setter 8 for the velocity of stirring at the solidification interface, so that the optimum velocity of stirring at the solidification interface corresponding to the solidification thickness is selected. An electric power source for the electromagnetic stirrer is automatically controlled by this selected value to supply the correct electric current for stirring to the stirrer 2. The continuously cast ingot of superior quality by the correct stirring is obtained.
