Abstract
PURPOSE:To fine the structure of cast ingot and increase the uniformity of the structure by opposing an N pole and an S pole with a cast ingot inbetween, and rotating permanent magnets. CONSTITUTION:Molten copper or copper alloy M is supplied from a tundish 17 into a mold 11, whilst a cast ingot 24 is formed on a bottom plate 21 by the water supply into a water cooling jacket 11b and the cooling by a water cooling shower 20. The ingot is moved successively downward. At this time, permanent magnets 13a, 13b are turned by operating electric motors 14 from the time when the molten metal M is filled in the mold 11. A rotating magnetic field is applied to the unsolidified molten metal of the cast ingot 24 positioned between the magnets, that is, a molten pool 19, by the prescribed rotation of a pair of these permanent magnets 13a, 13b of which the N pole and S pole are opposed, whereby eddy current is induced in the molten metal. A rotating force is generated in the molten metal 19 by the effect of this eddy current and the magnetic field. By the above, the crystal grains of the cast ingot 24 are fined, and the effect of impurities on embrittling are considerably decreased.
