Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the machinability of a high Mn nonmagnetic steel, especially the punchability by adding S and Cu to the steel.
CONSTITUTION: This high Mn nonmagnetic steel with superior machinability consists of 0.2W0.7% C, ≤2% Si, 6W12% Mn, 0.1W0.35% S, 2W10% Ni, 2W10% Cu, 0.01W0.1% N and the balance Fe with impurities or further contains ≤0.60% one or more among Zr, Ti and Se. S forms composite sulfide inclusion together with Mn and Ti, yet less than the lower limit of S produces no effect, and more than the upper limit of S does not enhance the machinability. Cu is an element stabilizing the austenite phase, and such a proper quantity of Cu has an effect of improving the machinability and increases stacking fault energy in the steel. Accordingly, the work hardening of shavings is relieved during cutting, and crater wear and flank wear are reduced to elongate the life of tool steel. These effects are not produced by less than the lower limit of Cu, and more than the upper limit of Cu produces less effects and deteriorates the hot workability remarkably.
