Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide superior corrosion resistance to nodular corrosion to a Zr alloy by adding a specified element stabilizing β phase to the alloy.
CONSTITUTION: A Zr alloy having small cross-sectional area of thermal neutron absorption is used as a structural material for the core of a nuclear reactor, yet white spotlike corrosion called nodular corrosion is produced on the alloy surface by a change with the passage of time. In order to prevent the corrosion, to Zr is added at least one of 0.2W21% Mo, 0.1W6.4% Mn, 0.1W17.5% Nb, 0.1W 26% Al and 0.1W6.4% Ag, and they are alloyed. The resulting Zr alloy is quenched from the high temp. β region to form a martensite structure, and it is annealed. A black oxide film is then formed on the alloy surface by autoclave treatment or other method. Thus, the corrosion resistance to nodular corrosion is enhanced.
