Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent components of balls for pulverization made of superhard alloy from entering Si3N4 powder as impurities and deteriorating the sinterability of the powder as starting material for manufacturing a sintered Si3N4 body by coating the surfaces of the balls with Si3N4 and using the coated balls in the manufacture of the powder.
CONSTITUTION: Si3N4 synthesized by a solid phase reaction method or a vapor phase reaction method is pulverized using balls for pulverization made of superhard WC-Co alloy so that the average grain size is regulated to ≤1μm, and ≥90% of the resulting powder has ≤3μm grain size. By coating the surfaces of the used balls with Si3N4 in several μm W several mm thickness, WC and Co as ball components are prevented from entering the powder as impurities due to wear and deteriorating the sinterability of the powder.
