Abstract

PURPOSE: To inexpensively manufacture lightweight ferromagnetic Al-base parts with practical strength by mixing powder of an Al material with powder of a ferromagnetic metal, compression-molding the mixture, and sintering the moldings at a low temp.
CONSTITUTION: Powder or shavings of Al alloy and powder or shavings of a ferromagnetic metal or alloy are mixed in 20:1W1:1 wt. ratio and compression- molded. The moldings are sintered at a temp. below the m.p. of Al alloy, or they are heated, partially sintered, and hot worked to complete sintering. By this powder metallurgical method Al and ferromagnetic metallic particles coexist while almost preventing the formation of a solid soln. or a compound. Accordingly, the ferromagnetic metal in Al provides ferromagnetism to the Al-base parts without deteriorating the magnetism.
