Abstract

PURPOSE: To save electric power consumed by an arc furnace for melting the residue of city refuse left after incineration (ash), by subjecting the ash to melting treatment by introducing the same into the arc furnace after drying and preheating the ash by the combustion heat of fuel.
CONSTITUTION: Ash of city refuse left after incineration in a refuse incinerating furnace (not shown) is dropped into water for humidifying the same. The ash thus humidified is carried from an ash storing hopper 1 to a rotary drier 3 via feeder 2 for drying and preheating the humidified ash. The ash thus dried and preheated in the rotary drier 3 is carried into an enclosed are furnace 4, in which the ash is molten by the heat of arc produced between electrodes 5 and an electrically conductive material 6 such as molten metal or graphite at the bottom of the furnace 4. By thus applying heat in the arc furnace 4, organic substances contained in the ash are converted into combustible gas. The combustible gas thus obtained is supplied from an outlet port 8 to a burner 9 for utilizing the same as a heat source for the drier 3.
