Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the discharge capacity of a battery with a nonaqueous electrolyte, by restraining the swell of a positive electrode, which swell occurs upon discharge, and thus inhibiting the increase of the overall height of the battery through the use of a negative lithium electrode, a positive electrode consisting of iron sulfide and copper oxide and the addition of a specific amine to the electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:There are employed a negative lithium electrode 8 and a positive electrode 2 which consists of a mixture of iron sulfide and copper oxide and whose density has been adjusted to 2.0-3.0g/cm<3>. 1,2-Diphenylethylene diamine is added to the electrolyte. The electrolyte is prepared by adding 2-10pts.wt. of the above amine with 100pts.wt. of a known electrolyte, for example, obtained by dissolving lithium prechlorate or the like in propylene carbonate or 1,2-dimethyoxyethane or the like. As the iron sulfide, there is used ferrous sulfide, ferric sulfide or iron disulfide while cuprous oxide or cupric oxide is employed as the copper oxide. It is preferable to mix the iron sulfide and copper oxide in a weight ratio of 70:30- 25:75. The adjustment of the density of the positive electrode 2 is carried out by adding a sublimable substance such as ammonium carbonate with the mixture of the iron sulfide and copper oxide, compression forming the same and then causing the substance to sublimate.
