Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the syneresis of an electrolyte whose main component is zinc chloride, and reduce the internal resistance of a battery by adding to the electrolyte an acetal of a polyvinylalcohol as a starching agent. CONSTITUTION:A separator 7 made of nonweaved cloth such as polyethylene or polyester, is interposed between a zinc negative-electrode 5 and a positive electrode 6 whose main component is manganese dioxide. The separator 7 holds an electrolyte 8 whose main component is zinc chloride with increased viscosity; an acetal of a polyvinlalcohol is used for increasing the viscosity of the zinc chloride. For example, 25% zinc-chloride solution is added with 3wt% of vinyl-acetal fibers, and the mixture is heated at 90 deg.C for 10min to dissolve the vinyl acetal and increase the viscosity of the solution, an electrolyte 8 being prepared. Consequently, the electrolyte 8 containing the dissolved vinyl-acetal is firmly fixed between the negative electrode 5 and the positive electrode 6, the syneresis of the electrolyte is avoided, and the electrolyte 8 doesn't excessively migrate into the positive electrode. Thus, a battery with a small internal resistance which has little variations in its discharge performance can be obtained.
