Abstract

PURPOSE:To lengthen the life of an alkaline battery by employing a separator which is formed of a hydrophilic porous material, which is prepared by performing a given treatment on a fluorine-resin porous body having a given porosity and a given hole- diameter. CONSTITUTION:An alkaline battery is constituted of an amalgamated zinc powder 1, a negative lid 2, a mixture 5 made of silver oxide and graphite, a positive- electrode can 6, and the like. A separator 4 of such a battery is formed of a hydrophilic porous material, which consists of a fluorine-resin porous body which has a hole-diameter of 0.01-0.1mum and a porosity of 5-95%, and a water-soluble macromolecular compound which is made to be an in-water-soluble form and is packed into the spaces of the porous body. Here, the hydrophilic porous material alone may be used or may be laminated together with other materials to prepare the separator 4. A part or the all of the former water-soluble macromolecular compound preferably is cross-linked to make a microporous swelling gel. The former water-soluble macromolecular compound is preferred to be, for example, PVA which contains a hydroxyl group, a polyacrylic acid which contains a carbonyl group, or a polyacrylamide which contains a nitrogen atom.
