Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the open-circuit voltage characteristic of an alkaline manganese battery during the preservation, by making manganese dioxide which is used as the major component of a positive mixture to be added with a given amount of a graphite powder, which is prepared by heating and purifying a graphite powder of a given purity. CONSTITUTION:A positive mixture 2 is parpared by mixing electrolytic manganese dioxide used as the major material with 2-5wt% of a graphite powder, which is prepared by heating and purifying a graphite powder of 99-99.9% purity at 2,000-3,000 deg.C in an inactive atmosphere, before the mixture is compressed and molded. The positive mixture 2 is packed in a case 1, before a separator 4, a liquid holding material 5 made of nonwoven cloth, and a negative electrode 8 made up of an amalgamated zinc powder and a gelling agent such as CMC are placed over the mixture 2, thereby an alkaline manganese battery being constituted. Consequently, the decrease in the open-circuit voltage of the battery which is caused during the preservation can be improved, and the capacity of the battery can be increased by appropriately adjusting the amount of the former graphite powder which is used as a conductive material and is added to the positive mixture 2.
