Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a separator with a long stable life by employing a hydrophilic porous material, which is made of a given porous body and a water-soluble macromolecular compound which is made to be an in-water-soluble form and is packed into the spaces of the porous body. CONSTITUTION:An alkaline battery is constituted of an amalgamated zinc powder 1, a negative lid 2, a mixture 5 made of silver oxide and graphite, a positive-electrode can 6, and the like. A separator 4 of the battery is made of a hydrophilic porous material, which consists of a highly alkali-proof porous body which doesn't include a fluorine resin, and a water-soluble macromolecular compound which is made to be an in-water-soluble form and is packed into the spaces of the porous body. The hydrophilic porous material along may be used or may be laminated together with other materials to prepare the separator 4. The former highly alkali- proof material is preferred to be a polyolefin. A part or the all of the water-soluble macromolecular compound preferably is cross-linked to make a micro-porous swelling gel. The former water-soluble macromolecular compound is preferred to be, for example, PVA which contains a hydroxyl group, or a polyacrylic acid which contains a carbonyl group.
