Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent any passive state of the negative electrode of an alkaline battery, and enhance the cold characteristics and the high-load characteristics of the battery by adding a macrocyclic complex compound such as crown ether to either the electrolyte or the negative electrode. CONSTITUTION:A molded mixture 2 containing either silver oxide or manganese dioxide as a positive active material is placed in a metal case 1, and a separator 3 and a nonwoven cloth 4 are placed over the mixture 2. After that, a gellike negative electrode 5 made of zinc, which is prepared by mixing zinc powder and a pasty material such as CMC with a caustic alkali electrolyte added with a macrocyclic complex compound such as crown ether or cryptate, is placed on the cloth 4, thereby an alkaline battery being constituted. Owing to the above constitution, any zinc- oxide film is not formed on the surface of zinc contained in the negative electrode, since zinc oxide ions generated during the discharge of the former zinc are incorporated in an electrostatic field developed in the center of the ring of the complex compound adhering to the surface of the former zinc, and are diffused according to host-guest reaction. Consequently, any passive state of the negative electrode can be prevented, and the cold characteristics of the battery can be greatly improved.
