CONSTITUTION: A dialkyl ester of an α-alkylglutaric acid, especially α-methyl glutaric acid, and a dialkylester of oxalic acid are condensed in a polar aprotic solvent, especially dimethylformamide, in the presence of a strongly basic alkali metal, especially sodium, alkoxide, in the first stage at 0W80°C, especially 0W40°C, and in the second stage at 80W150°C, especially 100W150°C. After the solvent is removed from the reaction solution, the condensation product is hydrolyzed in an aqueous inorganic acid, preferably without isolation, to give the titled compound in high yield from raw materials industrially and readily available as a by-product, etc.
