Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as an intermediate of antiulcer agent, etc., by the thermal decomposition of a farnesylmalonic acid diester in the presence of a catalyst comprising hydrated dimethylsulfoxide and an alkali metal halide or cyanate.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula III is prepared, easily, economically, in high yield, in one step, by heating and decomposing a farnesylmalonic acid diester of formula I (R is II; R1,2 are alkyl, or alkenyl) in the presence of (A) an alkali metal halide or cyanate, (B) water, and (C) dimethylsulfoxide, at 100W190°C, pref. 150W180°C under atmospheric or reduced pressure for 5W20hr. The molar ratio of (A), (B) and (C) to the compound I is, e.g. 0.5W3.0, 1W5, and 1W20 to 1, respectively.
