Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material, an intermediate, etc. for organic synthesis of spices, agricultural chemicals, resins, dyes, etc. in high yield, causing a little pollution, by oxidizing an aromatic alcohol with an oxygen- containing gas using a catalyst comprising Pd as well as at least one of lead and copper.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic alcohol (e.g., benzenedimethanol, etc.) shown by the formula (R is H, alkyl, or aryl; n is 1W3) is oxidized with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst wherein either lead or copper or both are added to palladium to give an aromatic aldehyde (e.g., terephthalaldehyde, etc.).
EFFECT: Expensive reagents are not required free from the problem of liquid-waste treatment.
