Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A sesquiterpene derivative of formula I (R is carbinol, formyl, lower alkylene ketal, or lower alkylsilanoxy group).
EXAMPLE: The compound of formula II.
USE: An intermediate for the synthesis of warburganal which acts as a powerful antifeedant on armyworm.
PROCESS: 7-Oxoisodrimenin of formula III as a starting material is converted into a silyl derivative via a ketal, ketone, diacetate, epoxy, and triol derivatives, in order. The silyl derivative is refuxed with phosgene or a carbonyl-imidazole to form a carbonate derivative of formula II, which is treated with an organic acid, reacted with an oxidizing agent, and treated with a dihydric alcohol and an organic acid to give an alcohol derivative (formula V), aldehyde derivative (formula VI) and ketal derivative (formula VII) of the compound of formula I.
