Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A sesquiterpene derivative of formula I (R1 and R2 are H or lower alkyloxy groups).
EXAMPLE: The compound of formula II.
USE: An intermediate for the synthesis of warburganal, an antifeedant against armyworm.
PROCESS: 7-Oxoisodrimenin of formula III is treated with a dihydric alcohol, e.g. ethylene glycolor 1,3-propanediol, and an organic acid, e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid or camphorsulfonic acid, under refluxing, to form a ketal of formula IV, which is reduced with a reducing agent, e.g. lithium aluminum hydride, in an organic solvent to give a ketone of formula II wherein R1 and R2 are H in formula I. The ketone is then reacted with an acetylating agent, e.g. acetic anhydride-pyridine, in a solvent to afford a diacetate of formula V.
