Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound, useful as a raw material for agricultural chemicals etc., in high purity and yield industrially, by oxidizing a linear dimer of p-isopropenylphenol with a hydrogen peroxide or an organic peroxide in an inert solvent in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I or II (R1 is H or lower alkyl; R2 and R3 are H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, OH, halogen, or R1 and R2 or R3 together from methylenedioxy with O attached to R1) is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide or an organic peroxide of formula III (R4, R5 and R6 are H, alkyl or aryl) as an oxidizing agent at 25W95°C, preferably 28W60°C, in an inert solvent in the presence of an acidic catalyst, e.g. H2SO4, at the molar ratio between the oxidizing agent and the compound of formula I or II of 0.90W1.25, particularly 0.93W1.0, to give a compound of formula IV useful as a starting material for agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, antioxidants, etc. in ≥90% oxidation yield and high purity.
