Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a spring stainless steel greatly superior to a conventional steel in fatigue resistance after aging and having superior manufacturability, forming workability and corrosion resistance containing a predetermined percentage each of C, N, Si, Mn, Ni, Cr and Cu.
CONSTITUTION: This spring stainless steel contains, by wt., ≤0.15% C, ≤0.15% N, ≤1.5% Si, 0.5W2.0% Mn, 5.0W9.0% Ni, 13.0W20.0% Cr and 1.0W4.0% Cu. These components are necessarily adjusted so as to make austenite stability index Md30 represented by the equation -30W80°C. By aging this steel at a suitable temp. after cold working, the resulting end product shows superior spring characteristics without causing trouble in manufacture unlike a known steel.
