Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:Alkyl 2-oxo-3,5a,8-trimethylperhydroindeno[ 4,5-b ]furan-7-carboxylate of formula III (R is lower alkyl or aralkyl).
EXAMPLE: Methyl 2-oxo-3,5a,8-trimethylperhydroindeno[ 4, 5-b ]furan-7-carboxylate.
USE: A bioactive substance such as antibacterial agent, antitumor agent, etc.
PROCESS: The compound of formula III is prepared by reacting the compound of formula I with an alcohol of formula R-OH in the presence of a condensation agent such as ethyl orthoformate, and heating the resulting compound of formula IV in the presence of a Lewis acid and lead tetraacetate. As an alternative method, the compound of formula III is prepared by reacting the compound of formula I with an alcohol of formula R-OH in the presence of a Lewis acid and lead tetraacetate.
