EXAMPLE: 3-Methyl-7-(2-fluorophenylthio)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-2-one.
USE: Useful as an antiphlogistic, anodyne, and antipyretic, and an intermediate for synthesizing a lactone compound having the same medicinal effects.
PROCESS: A compound shown by the formula II (R2 is H, lower alkyl, or acyl; R3 is lower alkenyl) or its salt is oxidized, and a reaction product wherein the group R2 is acyl is hydrolyzed, to give a compound shown by the formulaI.
