Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable a sound ingot to be produced with extremely simple means by causing lubricating action in the initial frozen shell portion of the molten steel in a mold by gas spouting from multiple holes in the inside surface of the mold and in the frozen portion by water or steam films respectively.
CONSTITUTION: Gas such as nitrogen is spouted into a mold 1 through the gas spouting holes 3, 3'... in the inside surface of the mold and molten steel 10 is poured through a tundish 12. While the moten steel 10 is freezing, it is led by a dummy bar and decends. At this time, gas films are formed on the inside surface of the mold 1 and play the role of lubrication between the mold 1 and an ingot 7. Since the gas emits through the multiple microholes, the gas films are uniformly formed on the mold inside surface and the internal pressure of the gas film matching the head of the molten metal may be assured as a small flow rate. Next, water is spouted from the water spouting holes 6 at the center of the surfaces, opposing to the ingot, of the upper and lower holding pieces 4, 5 of the ingot supporting section 2 (frozen section). The ingot 7 is separated at a small clearance from the holding pieces 4, 5 by the water-steam two phase mixed layers formed by the evaporation of this water.
